Day 1 - February 24th

- Next, on page 84 of your notebook, create a cover page that says Unit 5: Our Federal Government.

Day 2 - February 27th
- Number page 85
- Glue in "Questions Political Scientists Ask"
- Today, we are focusing on the question at the top of the graphic organizer: "Why is the government needed?"
- Look at the "Life Without Government" chart on the bottom of the page.
- Work with the people sitting near you to discuss the questions in the chart.
- Here is an example: "If there were no rules in school, then people would talk without raising their hands. Students would be talking over each other and not listening. It would be difficult to learn and shy students wouldn't be likely to talk at all."
- You can't just steal my example answer!
- People create governments to avoid the kinds of problems you just described.
- The first thing you need to do when creating a government is to decide what the purpose of government should be (what is the government supposed to do?).
- Number page 86 and title it "Purposes of Government"
- Answer: What do YOU think the purpose of a government should be?
- Answer: Our class thinks governments should... (make a list of the different answers your classmates share during a class discussion -- at least 5)

- The document you see pictured above is the Constitution of the United States of America.
- The Constitution is the agreement made among people of the United States to form a government. It is a written document that created the system of government for our country.
- It describes the power and organization of our government and the rights and powers reserved for the people or the states.
- It describes how laws will be made, enforced, and interpreted.
- It acts as the highest law of our land. States cannot create laws that conflict with it.
- The Constitution puts limits on our government so that people have certain rights that cannot be taken away by government.
- The first part of the constitution is called the preamble. The preamble is important because it describes the purposes of government.

- Read the entire preamble below:
- "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
- Glue "Analyzing the Preamble" in to page 88.
- Find out from Ms. Smith what group you are supposed to be in.

- GROUP 2: To establish justice
- GROUP 3: To insure domestic tranquility
- GROUP 4: To provide for the common defense
- GROUP 5: To promote the general welfare
- GROUP 6: To secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity
- Write your assigned section (found above, depending on your group #), on the first part of the page 88 chart.
- Meet up with all other same-number members of your group.
- Discuss and answer the next two boxes on the chart. You can use the Preamble Glossary (pictured below) to help you.

- In the previous few lessons, you worked to find the meaning of the preamble, which explains the purposes of our government.
- Review the vocabulary term Founders by looking it up in your WWK.
- One of the challenges facing the Founders was how to create a government that would fulfill those purposes (do all of the things the preamble says it should do).
- Now, you will be exploring the characteristics of the type of government the founders decided to create.
- Glue the page with President Roosevelt's picture and quote onto page 90 of your notebook.
- Read the quotation from President Roosevelt.
- Write what you think he meant when he said that. Discuss with someone.
- This lesson will help you better understand what President Roosevelt meant when he made that statement.
- Fill out the rest of page 90 by reading through the passage and filling in the blanks.
- Glue the pledge page into page 91 of your notebook.
- Read the Pledge of Allegiance on your own, and fill in the missing word.
- The Founders studied the history of governments and chose to create a republic because:
- in a republic the power of the government is held by the people
- the people give power to their leaders (who they elect to represent them)
- the leaders are responsible for helping all the people in the country, not just a few.
- in a republic the power of the government is held by the people
- Fill in the word republic on the rest of the blanks on page 91,then read and discuss the characteristics and advantages of a republic.
- Glue the chart page in to page 92. Read about a constitutional government below. Then fill in the blanks using the info you read.
Day 6 - March 9th
- Title page 93 "Laws"
- Read the John Adams quote below.
- On page 93, copy down the quote and answer: What do you think he means?
- Read the list below. These are what laws are supposed to do. Write them down on page 93.
- Read the info below. Add this info to page 93.
- Read the article about the made-up country Egbonia.
- Use the article to help you complete the page "Analyzing the Government of Egbonia" (can be printed from the download link below).
- Glue the Analysis page in to page 94 of your packet.
